Job Description

I am recruiting for an Automation Engineer who to independently manage and develop complex state-of-the-art test and manufacturing fixtures and automation equipment for production lines. With a broad scope of responsibility, performs design, specification, fabrication, and validation of production equipment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Design, develop, specify, and document manual, semi-automated, and automated test and assembly equipment independently.
  • Specify most economic production processes, methods, operation sequence, and tooling for testing and assembly of product.
  • Manage and lead very large fixture and automation design programs from conception to delivery.
  • Manage, delegate, and lead multiple designs and prioritize tasks with little guidance from management.
  • Guide and mentor other engineers and interns on topics of fixture design, automation, department procedures, best practices, and engineering problem solving.
  • Independently lead efforts to improve the design lab and the company by creating procedures, expanding capabilities, and leading other internal projects.
  • Design and fabricate complex production fixtures and automation equipment for manufacturing, test, and design verification.
  • Perform and check complex calculations, specify equipment, and solve problems of high engineering complexity.
  • Create and update documentation which defines fixtures, including drawings, specifications, BOMs, and CAD databases.
  • Adhere to industry codes and standards as well as department practices and procedures.
  • Organize and prioritize a variety of projects and multiple tasks in an effective and timely manner, set priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Work on the design, fabrication, and assembly of models and prototypes.
  • Initiate and drive to troubleshoot and resolve fixturing and automation issues to solve problems, improve yield, or reduce product cost.
  • Obtain quotes and manage vendor relationships for non-production parts.
  • Generate quotes for fixtures and automation equipment, including material cost, fabrication cost, and engineering hours.
  • Verify fixture and equipment design requirements by testing and documenting results in a coherent manner.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automation Engineering, or similar discipline and seven plus years experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to operate a computer and use spreadsheet, database, word processing, and scheduling software.
  • High level of experience with one or more CAD packages, including ability to proficiently run CAM packages.
  • Advanced experience with CAM packages and FEA software.
  • Ability to effectively communicate (verbal and written) with managers, co-workers, vendors, contractors, and customers.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical publications, technical procedures, or other related documents.
  • Ability to apply complex mathematical concepts to practical situations.
  • Knowledge of structural mechanics and material science.
  • Proficiency with fixture and automation design concepts including concept generation, detailed design, fabrication, and design verification.
  • Proficiency with machine component design including machined parts, 3D printed parts, sheet metal, and modified OTS components.
  • Proficiency operating and training others on typical machine shop equipment such as a mill, lathe, drill press, sanders, and sheet metal forming tools.
  • Ability to use 3D printers and CNC mills or routers.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
