Chief Estimator
Job Summary: The Chief Estimator ensures consistent, profitable work in diverse markets that meets or exceeds the annual revenue and profitability goals of the company. This position is responsible for the oversight of the estimating team and process for all projects bid and awarded. The Chief Estimator will be responsible for strategically planning and implementing department and company initiatives. Estimate the most complex and large-scale jobs, including conceptual estimates, negotiated bids, budgets, general conditions, systems studies and comparisons, value engineering, subcontractor relations and staying up-to-date on industry developments applicable to estimating.
Our client specializes in the Heavy Civil/Site Work Construction Industry. Specific services/estimates may include but are not limited to; Mass excavation & Grading, Asphalt/Milling, MSE Retaining Walls, Site Concrete, Underground Utilities, Environmental Remediation, Storm/Water/Sewer modifications, & demolition.
Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Mentors Estimators regarding knowledge of equipment, material capabilities, personnel applications, and value engineering concepts. Works in a diligent and cooperative manner, to foster an overall positive and constructive environment for the continued success of other Estimators/company
  • Manages, monitors, and proactively interacts with Estimators and Assistant Estimators as bids are prepared.
  • Ensures that Estimators are evaluating and planning for safety in the estimating process.
  • Coordinates and assumes a leader s role in training of newly hired or promoted Estimators and Assistant Estimators.
  • Reviews bid invitations and public bid opportunities and assigns projects to other Estimators as required. Addresses customer or prospective customers' requests for bids with innovative approaches to estimates and proposals in a prompt, professional and courteous manner.
  • Responsible to review or facilitate peer review of all bids, estimates and proposals prior to submission to customer.
  • Reviews, understands, and interprets with accuracy project prints, drawings, maps, bidding specifications, scope descriptions, contracts, and related documents. Coordinates with the team to confirm appropriate scope of work.
  • Responsible to monitor and upgrade bidding system, regarding equipment, labor, material pricing and production rates.
  • Prepares estimates for large and complex projects.
  • Supports Estimators as needed with customer scope review meetings.
  • Participates in business development meetings alongside Business Development Director. Periodically checks in with existing clients.
  • Acts as a resource to project management during project award/startup phase to clarify any issues regarding what was considered in the estimate including materials and methods of construction.
  • Ensures the flow of project information is maintained and documented.
  • Schedules, coordinates, and oversees in-house meetings for awarded projects. Cooperates fully and acts as a resource and teammate with the project management team for all projects.
  • Recognizes and maintains the company's expectations, goals and requirements regarding profitability.
  • Fosters an environment of taking innovative approaches and offering value engineering ideas to meet customers needs.
  • Provides input to the Director of Estimating & Project Management regarding bidding status of all projects and cooperates fully with overall bidding priorities set by the leadership team.
  • Facilitates communication and collaboration with members of the Operations team to get input on bid productions and crew makeup for projects being bid.
Requirements:
  • 4-year Engineering, Construction Management or related degree highly preferred
  • At minimum 5+ years of Senior Estimating Experience
  • Proven experience within the Heavy Civil and/or Sitework Construction Industry (see job summary for specific trades)
  • Strong computer skills, communication skills, and organizational skills.
  • Proven ability to successfully manage construction projects and personnel.
