Job Description JOB DESCRIPTION:
Civil engineers are responsible for designing, overseeing, and managing extensive construction projects and systems, encompassing roads, buildings, airports, tunnels, dams, bridges, and water supply and sewage treatment systems. The roles within this field often involve work in design, construction, research, and education.
JOB DUTIES:
- Analyze survey reports, maps, and other data to strategize project plans
- Consider construction costs, government regulations, environmental factors, and other elements during the planning phase
- Conduct soil tests to assess foundation adequacy and strength
- Test and evaluate building materials like concrete, asphalt, or steel for specific projects
- Provide cost estimates for materials, equipment, or labor to determine project feasibility
- Utilize design software to plan and design transportation systems, hydraulic systems, and structures according to industry and government standards
- Oversee or participate in surveying activities to establish reference points, grades, and elevations for construction guidance
- Present findings to the public, covering topics such as bid proposals, environmental impact statements, or property descriptions
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:Civil engineers must hold a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related specialty. Licensure, essential for working as a professional engineer (PE), requires completion of a program accredited by ABET. In many states, a bachelor's degree in civil engineering technology is also acceptable for licensure.
Bachelor's degree programs in civil engineering or civil engineering technology involve coursework in math, statistics, engineering mechanics and systems, and fluid dynamics, among other subjects. The curriculum includes a blend of classroom learning, laboratory work, and field experience.
